Born Thomas Mulcrone on July 24, 1875 in Newport, County Mayo, Ireland, he came to the United States as a young man. In his late thirties he decided to enter the Passionists and professed his vows as a brother on May 2, 1915. His religious name was Augustine. For a while he contemplated entering the Trappists. For most of his life he was a refectotrian. The Passionist community at Detroit, Michigan called him “the man with the broom.”
