Born Adam Heilman on September 22, 1873 in Baltimore, Maryland, he was the son of Adam Heilman and Anna Flieger Heilman. As a youngster he moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where he attended St. Michael’s School on the Southside. After grammar school he went to work at glass manufacturing company and did office work. He decided to enter the Passionists. Because of the fact that he had a bad stutter it was decided that his Passionist vocation would be better served as a brother and than priest. The concern here was his ability to preach. He entered the Passionist novitiate in Pittsburgh and professed his vows on January 27, 1897. His religious name was Benedict. He was a sandal-maker, poultry man, porter, gardener, boiler man and cook.
