Born William J. Cassidy on May 30, 1869 in Altoona, Pennsylvania, he eventually entered the Franciscan brotherhood with hope of being a professor. However, a Franciscan professor was not his vocation. His was more inclined to the prayer and service as a Passionist brother. He completed his novitiate in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and professed his vows on July 23, 1893. His religious name was Bernard. Most of his years he was a cook in various monasteries.
