Born December 5, 1915 to Albert Sevart and Louise Vohs, he went to grammar school and then in August 1930 entered the Passionist Preparatory Seminary, Normandy, Missouri. He completed two years in the high school seminary and decided to be a Passionist brother. In 1932 he went to the novitiate in Louisville, Kentucky and professed his vows on December 17, 1933. A favorite hobby was photography and he loved classical music. He learned cooking from Brother Paul Quino during the novitiate and January 1, 1933 he was assigned to Des Moines, Iowa. He was head chef in eleven Passionist communities and two retreat houses. In 1955 he was assigned to Sierra Madre, California for thirteen years.
