He was born Patrick Wolf in Limerick, Ireland on January 22, 1849, the son of Patrick and Cecilia Wolf. At sixteen he immigrated to the United States and came to New York City. After working for several years on the Erie Railroad he entered the Passionist novitiate in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. On October 31, 1870 he professed his vows as a Lay-Brother and received the name Ignatius. He was part of the pioneer group to the Passionist foundation on Mount Adams, Cincinnati, Ohio. In subsequent years he was a cook in various monasteries. At thirty he had a heart ailment which forced him to leave the kitchen and led him to take care of the gardens. He was assigned to St. Michael’s, Union City; St. Paul’s, Pittsburgh, and for a good deal of time at St. Mary’s, Dunkirk, New York in conjunction with the Prep Seminary.
