Born James Carr on November 6, 1849 in Donegal, Ireland, he was the son of Patrick Carr and Margaret Callaghan. His family came to the United States and he entered the Passionist novitiate in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where he professed his vows on September 3, 1871 as a Passionist brother. While he had many positions as a brother, a chief responsibility was taking care of the heating apparatus in various monasteries. In his later years this work became too strenuous when his legs in particular brought him trouble and pain, and he served as a refectorian. He died at Normandy, Missouri.
