Born Joseph Keating on June 3, 1905 in Langdon, North Dakota he was the son of Patrick Keating and Mary Doyle. He was educated at St. Alphonsus Elementary and high school in Langdon. Passionist parish missions there led him to the Passionist Preparatory Seminary in 1928. In 1930 he requested to be a Passionist brother. He took the name James when he professed his vows on February 10, 1931. He served in St. Paul, Kansas, Detroit Michigan, Louisville, Kentucky, Cincinnati, Ohio, Sierra Madre, California, Birmingham, Alabama, Citrus Heights, California and in July 1980 came to Daneo Hall, Chicago.
