Born Denis Murphy on September 28, 1895 in South Boston, Massachusetts, he was the son of Cornelius and Bridget Murphy. He served in the military during World War I and then decided to enter the Passionists. He professed his vows on July 21, 1921. His religious name was John. For many years he was a cook for the Jamaica, New York retreat house and infirmarian and tailor for the monastery. In 1945 his health began to fail and he was relieved of those duties.
