Born in Freiburg, Germany on February 4, 1837 he was the son of Francis Gramlich and Catherine Kaiser Gramlich. His family came to the United States when he was a young boy and they settled in Allegheny, Pennsylvania. He entered the Passionists in 1858 and on September 8, 1859 he professed his vows as a Passionist brother. For many years he was a cook at various Passionist foundations. In 1887, as a result of an accident he lost use of his right hand yet he still continued to work as a cook and refectorian to the best of his ability. On December 26, 1926 he was transferred from Baltimore, Maryland to Pittsburgh. Upon arrival he was diagnosed with dropsy and died the following month.
