Born Walter Culverhouse on December 9, 1897 in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, he was the son of Hugh and Margaret Broderick Culverhouse. Some time later his family moved to Holy Name Parish in Springfield, Massachusetts. From there he went to the Passionist novitiate in 1925 and received the religious name Lawrence when he professed his vows as a brother on November 21, 1926. For over ten years he worked at various retreats during which time he began to experience difficulties. His obituary says “…the Cross became heavier. It was a staggering Cross. It bewildered him; it made him misunderstood by others.” This led him to feel desolation and abandonment until his death.
