Born Charles Higgins on November 1, 1859 in County Cavin, Ireland, he arrived in New York City as a young man and was employed there for a short time. He entered the Passionist novitiate and professed his vows as a brother on June 10, 1883. His religious name was Patrick. He ministered in various communities were he took care of the heating plant, garden and other responsibilities such as cook, infirmarian and tailor. He was assigned to West Hoboken, New Jersey; Baltimore, Maryland; Louisville, Kentucky; St. Paul, Kansas; Chicago, Illinois; and Normandy, Missouri. He was one of the pioneer members of the Kansas community and was known among many of the farmers and settlers of the area.
