Born Richard Clarke in Martinsburg, West Virginia on January 13, 1830, he grew up to become a carpenter by trade which proved quite helpful in his life and ministry as a Passionist brother. He professed his vows in Pittsburgh on December 27, 1860 and for almost twenty-five years was employed on the quest. This ministry required that he go to various locations and solicit money for the good of the Passionists. In 1909 he suffered a stroke which left him an invalid. He suffered another stroke several days before his death.
