Born Charles Caulson on July 26, 1908 in Dunmore, Pennsylvania, he was the son of Charles and Mary Burke Caulson. He attended Dunmore Grammar school #8 and Dunmore High School. He went to the Passionist novitiate in West Springfield, Massachusetts and professed his vows on May 29, 1934. His religious name was Ronan. Prior to his entry into the Passionists he worked in the mines and in later years received Black Lung benefits. In his various assignments as a Passionist brother he was in charge of buildings and grounds with a speciality in metal working. Assignments included Immaculate Conception Monastery, Jamaica, New York; Holy Cross, Dunkirk, New York; and St. Ann’s, Scranton, Pennsylvania.
