Brother Valentine Rausch, C.P., St. Paul of the Cross Province (1870-1967)

Born September 2, 1870 in Bavaria, he came with his family to the United States when he was ten years old. They settled in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where he met the Passionists. He professed his vows as a Passionist brother on December 2, 1890. His life was spent in various monasteries and when he was fifty-six he requested to return to his native Germany to help establish the Passionists. In 1936 he was expelled by the Nazis because he was a United States citizen. He was held prisoner at the Passionist monastery, Schwarzenfeld, Germany and at the age of sixty-six was put in a boxcar and transported in Lisbon, Portugal and was sent from there back to the United States. In his mid-seventies he was infirmarian at Baltimore, Maryland. Later he was at Brighton, Massachusetts until 1949. At that time he moved to Jamaica, New York. He then moved to West Springfield, Massachusetts. He died at Mercy Hospital, Springfield, Massachusetts.
