Born March 2, 1901 in Kilvaloon, County Roscomon, Ireland, when he was eighteen or nineteen his youngest brother brought him to live in the United States with his aunt in Newark, New Jersey. It is said that he learned of the Passionists through Sign magazine. He was professed on August 15, 1926 as a Passionist brother and served throughout the province as a tailor, cook, infirmarian, and porter at the door. In Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania he was an early member of the Brothers Formation Program. Other assignments included Holy Cross, Dunkirk, New York; Union City, New Jersey; West Springfield, Massachusetts; and porter at the Jamaica, New York monastery. When his health began to fail he was assigned to Brighton, Massachusetts and finally the Shrewsbury Nursing Home.
