Born Leander Sandoval on February 26, 1859 in Tacubaya, Mexico, a suburb of Mexico City, Mexico, he was the son of Nicholas and Augustina Sandoval. He made his Passionist profession in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on May 16, 1879 and received the name Athanasius. On June 17, 1879 he accompanied Father Fidelis Kent Stone, C.P. on the SS Arizona: their final destination was Rome. When they arrived in Paris they met Passionist Superior General Bernard Mary. That meeting led to Confrater Sandoval being assigned to the Passionist Retreat at Monte Argentario, Italy. After staying there for several months, in October 1879 he was transferred to the Passionist retreat in Rome at Scala Sancta. There he took ill and died.
