Born Gerard Buchele on May 24, 1897 in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, he was the son of Michael Buchele and Agnes McNally. In April 1912 he attended a Passionist mission as an altar boy. He went to Duquesne University High School Department and then the College. In 1916 he entered the novitiate in Pittsburgh. He left behind a promising music career. On October 22, 1917 he professed his vows. His religious name was Pius. He studied at St. Gabriel’s, Brighton, Massachusetts and then went to St. Ann’s, Scranton, Pennsylvania. He died at St. Ann’s from the flu epidemic.
