Born on December 18, 1866, he was professed on September 1, 1921. He was ordained on March 9, 1895. Father McKiernan grew up in Jersey City, New Jersey and before entering the Passionists worked on Wall Street in New York City. For years he served as a lector in the Passionist seminary. He also suffered from chronic arthritis. From 1931 to 1946 he resided at West Springfield, Massachusetts where he often had the habit of falling asleep in the cool corner of the monastery library on a hot summer afternoon.
