Born James Hughes on June 10, 1845 in county Armagh, Dootrat, Ireland he came to the United States at an early age and entered the Pittsburgh novitiate in 1865. He professed his vows on November 4, 1866. His religious name was Alexander. He was ordained on May 25, 1872 . He was a pastor at St. Michael’s Church, West Hoboken, New Jersey, then pastor in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was then vicar in Pittsburgh followed by rector of Holy Cross, Cincinnati. He died from a solar prostration which had occurred some years before when he was vicar in Pittsburgh.
