Born Alfred Adler on September 3, 1908, he went to the Passionist Preparatory School at Normandy, Missouri after some time in the business world. He professed his vows on July 27, 1932. His religious name was Bartholomew. He was ordained on May 18, 1940. He was a preacher of parish missions. For five years he was a military chaplain in the Army. He worked at retreat houses in Detroit, Michigan; Houston, Texas; St. Louis, Missouri; Warrenton, Missouri and in California. He was a well-known story teller. He was much excited about the changes brought about due to the Second Vatican Council.
