Born Joseph Mulligan on October 8, 1892 in New York City, he was the son of Bernard and Catherine Nulty. As a young boy he ended up separated from his family and an orphan in Buffalo, New York run by Father Baker. There he met a Passionist priest from Dunkirk, New York who served as a chaplain. Inspired, he professed his Passionist vows on May 26, 1912 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His religious name was Bartholomew. He was ordained on December 18, 1920. He lived at St. Gabriel’s Monastery, Brighton, Massachusetts. He died at the Shrewsbury Nursing Home, Shrewsbury, Massachusetts.
