Born William Coffey on July 16, 1908 in Cincinnati, Ohio, he was the son of Bernard Coffey and Elizabeth Reardon. He professed his Passionist vows on August 4, 1927 and was given the religious name Bernard. He was ordained on December 20, 1933. Over the years he served as vicar in the Passionist communities at Cincinnati and Sierra Madre, California. He was also rector of Des Moines, Iowa, Cincinnati, and Detroit, Michigan and pastor of Holy Cross Parish, Cincinnati and assistant pastor at St. Agnes Parish, Louisville, Kentucky. In the last years of his life he was a resident of Daneo Hall, Chicago, Illinois where he died of congestive heart failure.
