Born on August 23, 1906, he went to the diocesan seminary first but decided that he wanted to be a Passionist priest. He professed his vows on August 15, 1928. He was ordained on April 28, 1934. Father Barth was considered an amazing preacher and an amazing person to live with. In both cases it was not uncommon for him to have gadgets or props to entertain, and more important for him, to get some Gospel point across to the person or audience. He had strong devotion to St. Gabriel, the young Passionist saint so he wrote Boy in A Hurry. He likewise had a devotion to Maria Goretti who was from a Passionist parish in Italy. He also held various positions of leadership among the Passionists.
