Born Edward Oakes in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on November 4, 1911, he was the son of Charles Oakes and Mary Crenny Oakes. He entered Holy Cross Seminary, Dunkirk, New York in 1927 to begin his second year of high school. He professed his vows on August 15, 1933 in West Springfield, Massachusetts. His religious name was Charles. He was ordained April 23, 1940 at St. Joseph’s Monastery, Baltimore, Maryland. He served as vice-master of novices. He was assigned to St. Michael’s Monastery, Union City, New Jersey where he was a confessor and member of the community. He died in Union City from acute leukemia.
