Born September 18, 1875 in Newark, New Jersey, he grew up in St. James Parish and was educated by the Sisters of Charity. For several years he was employed in industry in order to assist his family. He then entered the Passionists and professed his vows on February 11, 1896. He was ordained on January 18, 1903. He was a vice-master of novices, professor, director of students, vicar, and a hospital chaplain. Throughout his life he struggled with his health and in 1913 surgery diagnosed him with stomach cancer.
