Born on February 1, 1901 in Newark, New Jersey, he was the son of Thomas Kane and Ellen Waldron. He attended St. Joseph’s Parochial School and St. Benedict’s Prep in Newark. He entered the Passionist Preparatory School in Baltimore, Maryland. On November 3, 1920 he pronounced his vows in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Before ordination he studied in Baltimore, Scranton, Boston and Union City. He was ordained at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Newark by Bishop Pasquale Diaz, S.J., the exiled Bishop of Mexico. He was a member of the Passionist mission band, Director of Students, Vicar, Rector and Military Chaplain and member of the Jamaica, New York community where he served as a confessor.
