Born James Callahan on December 17, 1892 on Mt. Adams, Cincinnati, Ohio, he was the son of Joseph Callahan and Helen Hart. He entered the Passionist novitiate in Louisville, Kentucky. He professed his vows on January 6, 1909. His religious name was Dominic. He was ordained a priest on June 13, 1915. For many years he was a professor of philosophy and dogmatic and moral theology. For two terms he was rector of Immaculate Conception Monastery, Chicago, Illinois. He also was popular preacher of missions and retreats.
