Born Patrick McNamara on March 5, 1854 in Ireland, he was the son of Martin McNamara and Maria Boyle. He professed his Passionist vows on January 17, 1871 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and received the religious name Dominic. He was ordained a priest on September 21, 1879 by Bishop Ryan of Buffalo in Dunkirk, New York. Father McNamara died at St. Michael’s Monastery, West Hoboken, New Jersey from smallpox.
