Born John Coalton Sprigler in Coalton, West Virginia on September 17, 1907 he was the son of Charles A. and Mary Sylvers Sprigler. Later his family returned to Louisville, Kentucky where they had earlier resided. He grew up at St. Agnes Parish, Louisville. After graduating from St. Agnes, John entered the Passionist Preparatory Seminary at Normandy, Missouri. He professed his vows on August 2, 1925. Six years later he was ordained a priest on December 20, 1931. He began to teach at the Passionist Prep and pursued a Masters Degree in English. In 1940 he was sent to Detroit, Michigan to teach. Then he was assigned to mission and retreat preaching. Later he was a Provincial Consultor and the Director, for a short time, at Daneo Hall, Chicago, Illinois. He was a chaplain for the Knights of Columbus, taught religion at Resurrection High School and ministered to the Sisters of the Resurrection on special occasions. He was active in the Kiwanis Club and assisted at St. Celestine Parish and St. Maria Goretti Parish.
