Born William J. Cummings in Dunkirk, New York on August 20, 1893, he went to St. Mary’s School. After graduation he entered the Passionist Preparatory College at St. Mary’s, Dunkirk for one year and then went on to the novitiate in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He professed his vows on November 6, 1912. On December 18, 1920 he was ordained a priest. He was appointed vice-master of novices and then went on to preach missions.
