Born Joseph Flynn in Dublin, Ireland on January 29, 1839, he professed his Passionist vows on March 31, 1863. His religious name was Gabriel. He was ordained February 9, 1865 by Bishop James Roosevelt Bayley, Bishop of Newark, New Jersey. After ordination he was a preacher of parish missions which included preaching in San Francisco, California. About 1876 he caught a cold while preaching in the Buffalo area and it soon became evident that he had tuberculosis. He died at St. Joseph’s Monastery, Baltimore, Maryland.
