Born Florence Smith in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on January 26, 1887, he was the son of Jacob Schmitt and Catherine Huebert. His brother Leonard (Isidore) was also a Passionist. Florence took his vows on February 28, 1910 and received the name Gilbert. He was ordained on May 16, 1918 in the third year of their theology. He was Director of Students during the 1920s. He was also an effective preacher. He died at Holy Family Monastery, West Hartford, Connecticut and was buried in Pittsburgh.
