Born on August 22, 1835 in Rome, Italy, he was the son of Thomas and Francisca Matassi. He professed his vows on April 28, 1857 and was ordained on March 30, 1861. Two years later he was sent to the Passionist foundation in California and from there arrived in the province of St. Paul of the Cross. He served as a rector in several monasteries. During the last six years of his life he suffered from diabetes. His funeral sermon was preached by Cardinal James Gibbons of Baltimore, Maryland.
