Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on January 27, 1885, he professed his Passionist vows on July 9, 1901. He was ordained on May 29, 1907 in St. Louis, Missouri. Father Clarey spent many years as a professor of philosophy and director of students in the Passionist Seminary of Holy Cross Province. In his later years he was a pastor in parishes in Cincinnati, Ohio; St. Rita’s in Sierra Madre, California from 1926 to 1938; St. Paul, Kansas; and Hutchinson, Kansas. When he became ill he was on assignment in the Diocese of Springfield-Cape Giradeau, Missouri. From 1960 to 1963 he was at St. Agnes Cathedral in Springfield, Missouri and also at St. Wenceslaus Parish, Karlin, Missouri. From 1963 to 1965 he resided at the Passionist monastery in Sierra Madre, California.
