Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on December 25, 1883, he professed his Passionist vows on May 8, 1900. The last three years of his student life were spent in Rome where he was ordained a priest on May 20, 1906. He served as a parish priest at St. Michael’s Parish, Southside, Pittsburgh which was his home parish. When World War I began Father Smith volunteered as a military chaplain and served in the United States and Europe. After the war he was pastor at St. Joseph’s, West Hoboken, New Jersey for seven years and then thirteen years at Our Lady of the Isle, Shelter Island, New York. Then he preached parish missions in the eastern United States and Canada. He was named vice-postulator for the canonization of Maria Goretti who was proclaimed a saint on June 24, 1950 by Pope Pius XII. In 1967 he could not be as active a preacher and retired to Brighton, Massachusetts. He died at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, Brighton.
