Born on August 31, 1883 in Louisville, Kentucky he grew up in the shadows of the monastery. He entered the Passionist Preparatory Seminary, Dunkirk, New York in 1899 and took his religious vows at Pittsburgh on December 8, 1901. He was ordained a priest on April 28, 1909. Shortly after ordination he came down with tuberculosis. After two years in Louisville, he was assigned to Colorado to practice his ministry as best he could, since it would be better for his health. Father McDonnell died in Colorado Springs, Colorado after a sustained illness.
