Born in East Boston, Massachusetts on December 4, 1900, he completed his elementary and high school there and then entered Holy Cross Seminary, Dunkirk, New York in the summer of 1920. In August 1923 he went to the Passionist novitiate in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and professed his vows on September 14, 1924. He was ordained by Bishop Dunn at the Jamaica Monastery Church, New York on February 8, 1931. After a year of sacred eloquence he was a preacher of parish missions and renewals. He served a term as superior of the Jamaica monastery.
