Born December 18, 1896 in Brighton, Massachusetts, educated locally, he was the first altar boy to serve the Passionists at the Nevins Estate. In February 1913 he entered the Passionist Preparatory School and was then sent to the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania novitiate. He professed his vows on November 11, 1915 and came down with tuberculosis. He was sent to a sanitarium in White Haven, Pennsylvania. By special dispensation he was ordained a priest on November 21, 1921.
