Born April 28, 1919 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he was the son of Francis and Rose Begley. He was educated at St. Joseph’s Prep in Philadelphia and then Holy Cross Prep, Dunkirk, New York. He was professed on September 11, 1941 and was ordained February 25, 1948. For his first fourteen years as a Passionist he was a professor. After ordination he studied theology and Semitic languages at The Catholic University of America for two years. Then he went to The Biblical Institute, Rome for studies in Sacred Scripture. From 1952 until 1965 he was professor of Sacred Scripture in Baltimore, Maryland; Scranton, Pennsylvania; Brighton and West Springfield, Massachusetts. During this time he took courses in Egyptian at Johns Hopkins University, Arabic at Harvard and East Mediterranean studies at Brandeis University. He lived at St. Ann’s, Scranton for eight years. He was a member of The Catholic Biblical Association of America, the Society of Biblical Literature and the American Council of Learned Societies. He was a professor of Canon Law and religions at Marywood College, Scranton. He assisted each weekend at St. Mary’s Parish, Mt. Pocono, Pennsylvania.
