Born Raymond Baker on April 28, 1923, he eventually entered Holy Cross Seminary, Dunkirk, New York where he was a respected athlete and student. He professed his vows in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on August 15, 1944 and received the name Kiernan. He was ordained on February 27, 1951. Early in his ministry as a priest Father Baker had an emotional setback which prevented him from exercising public ministry. For many years he lived in the Jamaica Monastery in New York.
