Born Peter Harrigan on November 28, 1857 in Cincinnati, Ohio, he was the son Thomas Harrigan and Frances Doyle Harrigan. He attended the parochial schools and then went on to St. Xavier’s College in Cincinnati. Feeling called to the religious life he entered the Passionist novitiate in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where he professed his vows on September 4, 1875 and received the religious name Leo. He was sent to Rome for studies and ordained a priest on December 17, 1880. Sometime later he returned to the United States and became a parish missionary. He produced a great many manuscripts on numerous topics. In his later years his energy weakened due to diabetes and pulmonary tuberculosis.
