Born Edward Smith on July 8, 1888 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, his parents made their home in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. In 1908 he entered the Passionist Preparatory Seminary at St. Mary’s, Dunkirk, New York. He was professed in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on July 25, 1909 and ordained a priest on May 30, 1917. After completing sacred eloquence he was appointed director of students and for several years was vice-master of novices as well. At different times he was appointed vicar and in 1930 he was appointed pastor of St. Ann’s Parish, Scranton, Pennsylvania. In 1943 he suffered a stroke which incapacitated him. He was transferred from Pittsburgh to Scranton where he died.
