Born Vincent Vaitiekaitis on December 7, 1908 in Chicago, Illinois, he was the son of Joseph Vaitiekaitis and Mary Anne Bartusaite. He was educated at Holy Cross School. In 1921 he entered the Passionist Preparatory Seminary, Normandy, Missouri. Professed on August 3, 1926, he received the religious name Leopold and was ordained on December 20, 1931. Overall his ministry was divided between teaching, hospital chaplaincy, and parish work. For instance he was professor of Church History at Immaculate Conception Monastery, Chicago, Illinois. Though not professionally trained he did his own work and study and ended up typing up his own text. For nine years Father Vaitiekaitis was also Chaplain at the State Hospital, Dunning, Illinois. He was a regular visitor to parishes where he was well-accepted.
