Born George Maillet on September 26, 1903 in Meteghan, Nova Scotia, Canada, he was the son of Charles Maillet and Jeanne Comeau. He entered the seminary in Halifax, Canada with the idea of becoming a diocesan priest. However, he read the life of St. Paul of the Cross and decided to join the Passionists. This was not to occur until later. He was ordained a priest for the diocese of Nova Scotia on June 24, 1930 and then applied to the Passionists. He professed his vows on October 29, 1931 and received the religious name of Louis. As a Passionist he was a preacher of French missions and devotions throughout New England and the Maritime provinces in Canada. His bi-lingual talents also were well-received by religious orders.
