Born John McLaughlin on April 7, 1931 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he was the son of Nelson and Cecilia Shultis McLaughlin. He attended St. Norbert’s School in Overbrook. At thirteen he visited Holy Cross Seminary, Dunkirk, New York with his uncle and decided in 1945 to enter the Passionists. He spent his first six years at Dunkirk. In 1951 he went to the Passionist novitiate in Pittsburgh and professed his vows on July 16, 1952. His religious name was Nelson. He was ordained on June 19, 1959 by Bishop Cuthbert O’Gara, C.P. in Union City, New Jersey. After a year of sacred eloquence at West Springfield, Massachusetts he was assigned as assistant pastor at St. Michael’s Parish, Union City. He worked there from 1960 until 1962. He then was assigned as a preacher of missions and retreats. On April 19, 1965 he had a fatal accident from which he died two days later.
