Born March 31, 1859 in Dublin, Ireland, his parents came to the United States when he was nine and they settled in New York City. He was educated in the New York City public schools and then at Manhattan College, Bronx, New York. He professed his vows as a Passionist on November 3, 1872. He was ordained on September 21, 1879 by Bishop Timon of Buffalo, New York. After ordination the Passionists sent him to England and Rome for advanced studies in literature and languages. He also had an excellent ability in music. Notable was the fact that he was an inventor of a shorthand system of writing. In 1910 he published “The Life of Blessed Gabriel, published by Kilner of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.. This was based on the life written by Father Hyacinth Hayes.
