Born David Goggin September 6, 1910 in Cincinnati, Ohio, he professed his Passionist vows on July 30, 1931 and received the religious name Nilus. He was ordained on June 30, 1939. From 1940 until 1945 he was assigned to Des Moines, Iowa and then Louisville, Kentucky as a preacher of parish missions. From 1945 until 1947 he was assistant pastor at Holy Family Parish, Birmingham, Alabama; from 1956 until 1960 he was pastor at St. Francis Parish, St. Paul, Kansas and held the same position from 1963 until 1968 at St. Gemma Parish, Detroit, Michigan. He served as retreat directorof Holy Name Retreat House, Houston, Texas from 1960 until 1962. From 1969 until 1977 he served as hospital chaplain at the Halstead Hospital-Hertzler Clinic, Halstead, Kansas.
