Born Daniel E. Doherty in Charlestown, Massachusetts on June 10, 1876, at twelve years old he was left an orphan. He took his vows as a Passionist religious on October 15, 1895. On January 18, 1903 he was ordained a priest. For a short time he was Vice-Master of Novices and parish priest but for most of his ministry, thirty-five years, he preached retreats to religious. Illness of the throat left him with a weak voice; nevertheless he persevered as a dedicated preacher. On December 17 he had a severe chill and was rushed to the hospital and was diagnosed with pneumonia.
