Born Walter Barry on September 15, 1890 in St. Louis he became a diocesan priest in the Archdiocese of St. Louis on June 6, 1922. He was ordained by Archbishop John J. Glennon. After ten years of service, which included being an associate pastor at Corpus Christi and St. Paul the Apostle parishes, he decided to enter the Passionist Congregation. He professed his vows on July 30, 1931 and for twenty-five years preached missions and retreats throughout the Midwest. Eventually his health began to fail so he decided that it was more beneficial to become a hospital chaplain. For fifteen years he served in Coffeyville, Kansas and Nazareth Home for the Aged in San Rafael, California and was a resident of the facility when he died.
