Born James Carey on March 21, 1857 in New York City, he was the son of Cornelius and Mary Carey. He professed his vows as a Passionist on December 6, 1874. In 1876 he was sent to Rome and remained there until 1882. He was ordained in Rome by Cardinal Monaco LaValletta at the Basilica of St. John Latern on June 11, 1881. However, he was ill and returned to the United States. It seems that some of the students – it appears sixteen in number – who were sent to Rome found the climate too difficult and once sick, it led to a premature death.
